Applying for Citizenship

The basics of applying for and earning Canadian citizenship.

The citizenship test

  • Usually a written test, but it can be an interview.
  • Tests two things: knowledge of Canada and adequate knowledge of English or French.
  • Adults aged 18–54 must pass; applicants 55 and over do not have to write the test.
  • All questions are based on this guide — every fact you need is in Discover Canada.

Getting ready

  • Study this guide, practise with a friend or family member, and use citizenship classes if available.
  • Free English/French language classes are offered by the Government of Canada.
  • Keep the Call Centre updated with your correct address during processing.

The ceremony

  • If you pass and meet all other requirements, you receive a Notice to Appear to Take the Oath of Citizenship.
  • At the ceremony you take the Oath of Citizenship, sign the oath form, and receive your Canadian Citizenship Certificate.
  • Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
